The Tate Talk was given this year by Caroline Holmes, a well known speaker and author, on Gertrude Jekyll, the artist and gardener. Gertrude Jekyll was born in Mayfair in 1843
The Annual General Meeting was held in the Church of the Holy Trinity, Stow Bardolph on the 23rd April, 2022. It was attended by approximately 60 members who after the business of the meeting enjoyed a talk by Louise Crawley, who was the Tate Scholar in 2019, about her dissertation on the Norwich Nursery, commonly known as Mackies after the family who ran it. Louise then told us about the current research she is doing for her PhD.
We were then treated to a brief history of Houghton Hall, and news about Houghton’s current exhibition by the Marquess of Cholmondeley, our new president.
The members walked from the church and enjoyed tea at Stow Hall and a walk around the beautifully kept gardens, which reflected the various periods of the previous houses on the site. The orchard was particularly worth a visit with the many varieties of fruit trees in flower. It was the most beautiful sunny day.
