The Tate Talk was given this year by Caroline Holmes, a well known speaker and author, on Gertrude Jekyll, the artist and gardener. Gertrude Jekyll was born in Mayfair in 1843
After a year of introspectively contemplating our own gardens, it was a great pleasure to visit Wretham Lodge garden on the 5th June. The 10 acre garden was immaculate in every respect, paths swept, outhouses composed and the planting was superb with careful attention paid to colour combinations. Nothing jarred, all was gentle on the eye and outstandingly “pretty” in the best sense of the word. Interesting plant combinations were everywhere but no jumble of colours
or variety. The palette was delicate and restrained and everything appeared in the best possible health.
If you missed it, I am sorry as it was a real treat to see the fine Georgian flint house built in 1810 surrounded by beautiful mature trees, walls in perfect order and an outstanding walled garden. The design and realisation of the whole garden was masterful and I rate it as one of the best I have visited. Surely one of Norfolk’s finest.
