2005 Journal

Norfolk Gardens Trust
The 2005 Journal contains:
The Leicester Monument
The park at Holkham Hall contains more ornamental garden structures than any other Norfolk estate, and towering above them, literally, is the exhuberant Leicester Monument. Christine Hiskey examines the often fraught genesis of a grand design.
Norwich Allotments
They are only a maximum of a quarter of an acre in size but in England and Wales there are over a quarter of a million of them - allotments. George Ishmael traces their history and continued relevance and popularity, with particular reference to the city of Norwich.

Carrow Conservatory
Conservatories head the list of vulnerable garden buildings, added to which the cost of restoration and maintenance is always high. A fine example of a late 19th century conservatory has been restored at Carrow House in Norwich, a conservatory actually designed and made in the city. Judith Cantell explains.
A Parterre by Two Ladies
The great parterre at Blickling Hall dominates the eastern section of the gardens, looked down on from the Long Gallery. It is the product of two ages and two garden styles, and the vision and enthusiasm of two contrasting women, as Roger Last discovers.
Losing the plot down at The Plantation
The resue from obscurity and destruction of the Plantation Garden in Norwich was the great Norfolk garden restoration of the 1980's. a restoration which continues today. But, argues Bryony Nierop-Reading, an even more important and exciting phoenix could have arisen from the brambles and ivy.
