2004 Journal

Norfolk Gardens Trust
The 2004 Journal contains:
Houghton Resurgent
As if maintaining the house, park and estate at Houghton is not enough, its owner Lord Cholmondeley has embarked on an ambitious programme of embellishment, both to park and gardens. Here he outlines his progress so far. Not only are lost features returning, but contemporary ones are also starting to make an impact.
Norfolk Shell Houses
Shells have found their way into gardens as decorative features since Roman times. The fashion for their use has waxed and waned, and the buildings which contained them have proved even more fragile. George Carter reveals some Norfolk survivors.

Rooms with a View
If ones garden commanded a view, to construct a Gazebo from which to admire it would seem a natural progression. Gareth Hughes uncovers some examples amid the pastoral prospects of Thorpe.
Shrouded in Decay
Patsy Dallas unearths a rare garden survivor, traces of a remarkable Stuart garden at West Dereham Grange.
Repton at Catton
The Landscaped Park at Catton, now part of Norwich, has long been considered to be Humphry Repton's first major work. Tom Williamson challenges the extent of Repton's involvement and in doiing so our perception of the importence of 'great names'.
Wolterton Makeover
The leading Landscape 'Gardener of his day', William Sawrey Gilpin visited Wolterton Hall in the 1820's to advise on changes to the landscape. Roger Last finds out what was proposed and something of Gilpin's approach to landscape.
